Dogwood was too dense already so I cut back almost all of the top growth. Few leaders left to grow out of the proportion to help thicken the structure. Let's see how thick they can get and how much it will help thicken bottom parts of the sub trunk. Top of the crown will be possibly partially defoliated in about the month time.

Hornbeam was cut back and edited a bit. Too much growth at the upper parts of the crown is shading inner structure and would cause dieback of weaker parts of the crown. Now much lighter and hopefully safe for inner growth for a few weeks. Shoots at the top cut back to one or two buds maximum. The lower part of the growth was largely left untouched to gain vigour.

Quercus pubescens No.7 thread grafting result

Back in April 2017, I did thread grafting on this oak tree. The graft was successful but not strong enough last year so I did not separate it back then. I thought it is time to move on with the task last week and I did the cut. As you can see I did not cut it at the entry point but well above close to the mother branch. I'm thinking about having two upward growing sub trunks. Only thing I need is the tree reversing flow in the part of the branch. I am really curious about how it will work. I hope it will not jeopardise the strength of the exit part of brach. 

Btw tree was finally repotted in spring from the plastic bowl into china ceramic pot. This tree is really decades from being finished, and not having such movement and nice bark it wouldn't be in my garden anymore. Now it seems to me it could have some future.

Tilia cordata No.2 "Josephine"

Tilia id growing very strongly so I had to cut the top of the crown already. The tree is slightly wired, just to edit branch position into bit better positions. Which is quite easy with tilia due to soft wood of the branches. Too much growth at the top of the crown was shading inner parts already and I would like to have couple more branches from new buds inside the crown, so I have to balance it. I did not touch lover parts so more growth will help gain girth at particular branches. Now foliage is of fantastic colours, we have great weather for bonsai in the last few days. Rain, not too much sun, 10 °C to 20°C. Tress love it, now it is the time for them to grow like weeds. 

BTW this tree is from pencil thick nursery tree, grown in the field for few years, it is much harder to achieve visual maturity with this kind of raw material.

Ten Years

Today it is exactly ten years since I launched my blog. I was thinking about what I can write down but had no really good idea. So I'm posting me and a tree, like I do, sometimes it is the tree alone. Sometimes we are looking at stuff and we think we know what we are seeing. Maybe there is a message. Sometimes there is. 

My message for You is:

Try to find best possible tree yourself, believe me, they are out there.

Work with local trees - they are best for your climate.

Use local resources if possible  - environment matters - shipping bags of clay around the globe sucks.

Dare to use your creativity, walk outside your home and look around, chances are you will find more inspiration in your nature surrounding You than browsing the web.

Dare to work alone, most of the time there will be nobody to help.

Be inspired by Your culture, Your nature, and Your tradition don't try to follow someones else dreams. 

Never stop dreaming.
